Julius P. Baumann came to Warrensburg in 1896 with his son David K.P. Baumann. They had been in the shirt-waist manufacturing business in New York City. In cooperation with James and Louis Emerson of the Empire Shirt Company, they began manufacturing ladies' shirt-waists here. They also made women's night robes of muslin and flannel. Later, another son, H.P. Baumann, joined the business. In the early 1900s, with up to 800 employees, 500 dozen waists and 200 dozen night robes were made daily. The Baumanns had a salesroom at 139 Spring Street, Manhattan. Mr. & Mrs. Baumann bought a house at the corner of Hudson Street and what is now Lake Avenue. Julius died in 1914 at the age of 72.
