Halsey Herrick, whose parents were James and Mary (Bennett) Herrick, was born in 1841. In his early years he was a farmer and carpenter but in 1865 opened a general store with his brother James on the Main Street site later occupied by the Crandall Block. Two years later they sold the business and opened a store in Lewisville, which lasted for 13 years. Around 1880 he moved to the store at the foot of Osborne Hill (Elm Street), which he sold about 10 years later. At this time he became involved with real estate, building numerous houses around town and renting them out as tenant houses. He married Eleanor Potter in 1869 and they had a daughter Elizabeth, who would marry Walter H. Pasco.
